24th illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 夔 (Kuí)
🐃As mentioned in The Classic of Eastern Great Wilderness: In the East China Sea lies 流波山 (Liúbō Mountain), seven thousand miles out to sea. On it sits a beast shaped like an ox, with a pale body, no horns, and one foot, named Kui. Every time it appears, there will be a storm followed by rain and wind. Its body shines with light, like sunlight and moonlight, and its roar is as deafening as thunder.
🐃Legend says that there are three times the appearance of Kui on earth was recorded in history. One was used by the Yellow Emperor, one was killed by the founder of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shi Huang and the third was reportedly shot dead by local people with a crossbow during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
🐃In 2500 BC during the myth Battle of Zhuolu, fought between the tribes led by the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di) and the Jiuli tribes under Chi You. Huang Di used and skinned Kui and made it into a war drum, and removed its bones to make a drumstick. The drum was known as the Thunder Drum, and its loud peals confused and scattered the forces of Chi You. The drum was said to have a resounding sound that could be heard over 500 miles, and continuous drumming could vibrate for 3800 miles away. The soldiers of Huang Di's tribe were energized and filled with courage, while Chi You's tribe was terrified, leading to their defeat.
.
In my opinion Kui walks by hopping, I imagine Kui dueling with Bifang in a jump rope competition🗿
